My First Roll of Film

One goal for myself for this year was to learn something new with photography. And something that I have always wanted to try was shooting film. I have a few film cameras that I received from my aunt’s garage sales. I did not know if they worked or not and for the last few years I have been using them as decorations rather than using them as they are meant to be used. Mitchell (my husband) helped me clean some corrosion out of my Nikon A2000 film camera, I wanted to start out using this camera because it has some more auto features on it to help me as I learn film photography. Thankfully Mitchell got it working and it has been really fun playing with it and figuring it out.

For my first “official” roll of film I wanted to pack my film camera with on our family trip to San Diego California. I was so excited to get to bring my film camera with and I had so much fun learning and playing with it. One thing that I hate to admit as a photographer is that I am a HUGE over shooter. I take way to many photos of the same things. So part of working with film is you only have a certain amount of frames to use. So I was so careful at what images I took and how many I took that when we were in San Diego I didn’t even fill a roll of film. A rookie mistake was everything I watched on youtube and read about online said that film rolls only had 24 frames. However I somehow bought 36 frame rolls and so when I was on my trip I flipped a complete 180 and undershot.

It all worked out in the end though because later on I was able to take my film camera with me to Montana on Mitchell and I’s anniversary trip and finish my roll of film in Glacier National Park, feel free to read about my anniversary trip here: (INSERT TRIP BLOG LINK)

Shooting on film was quiet the learning curve, learning about sunny 16 and the different settings was a good challenge for me. And when I went to get my film developed I was shocked at how many actually turned out. There were a few “happy accidents” but overall I am really happy with the results and I am so excited to continue learning film and playing around with it this year.
